of managing expectations, the guy that has managed them in his own fashion is chris christie. i want to play a little chris christie sound doubling down on the fact that this is a big deal tomorrow night for mitt romney. >> this whole race will be turned upside down thursday morning. >> what are you doing, christie? for god sake's if romney fails to meet those heavy expectations he's going to lose the general election and the republican party and that's going to leave open 26 -- oh. >> setting aside for 2016, part of me applauds the fact that christie is saying what everybody believes which it's a proving ground for mitt romney. and some part of me believes maybe it would be good if mitt romney said you know what, tomorrow night is a big deal and there going to be some wins and losses and i want to deliver a powerful and specific message about what i want to offer and the path forward. >> you have to be able to do that. i think all that chris christie, all that was missing from the interview was a christie 2016 t-shirt. he's the worst surrogate ever. >> or maybe the best. >> i don't know. i

, chris christie coming in, talking about the debate, also talking about how the press needs to ask tough questions of the president. but chris christie didn't get the memo that you're supposed to downplay expectations. yesterday he said his first debate was going to be a game changer. >> well, i don't think it really matters. people are making a little bit of a big deal about what he said. i think what matters is governor romney needs to close the gap on what i call the tug mcgraw principle, which is you've got to believe. he needs republicans and the press and independent voters to believe he can win. a lot of new polls out this morning. they all show, when this question's asked, people don't think romney's going to win, even a lot of people who support him think the president's going to win. i think that's one of the main things, stand with the president and convince people yeah, he's got a chance. >> you hear more and more people talking about the first debate being critical and it is with all the early voting going on, with the advantage that the president's taking in a lot of swing

's presidential debate. jack's joining us now with the cafferty file. jack. >> wolf, chris christie says that mitt romney is going to kick president obama's butt in tomorrow night's debate. hey, that's the way the new jersey governor talks. chris christie thinks romney will turn the election upside down, his words, and that it will be a brand new race after the showdown in denver. no surprise romney's people ran right away from chris christie's comments pretty quickly. they're trying to lower expectations, which is how candidates normally approach these things. but let's suppose for a minute that chris christie's right. what would it take for mitt romney to win the debate and change the storyline of this election? 50 million people are expected to tune in. many think tomorrow night is romney's last best chance to turn things around. he's been practicing for the debate for months on top of the practice he got in the almost two dozen primary debates. but here's the challenge, romney has to come off as likable, authentic and show that he can coect with the voters. we've been hearing that for months,

't. >> exactly. things are going pretty well in the expectations game. right up until governor chris christie of new jersey went on the air and hit mitt romney's expectation right out of the ballpark. listen to this. wednesday night the restart of this campaign i think you will see those numbers move right back in the other direction. come thursday morning the entire narrative of this race is going to change. >> you know, if you are in the romney camp, you are doing one of these. but truth be told they would like to see the race turned upside down wednesday morning. they don't want people to expect it. shep? >> shepard: john roberts, thanks very much. well, president obama spent the day in nevada. one of those key battleground states. campaign aides say he will be practicing for wednesday's debate with mock show downs with senator john kerry. team fox coverage continues. ed henry is live in las vegas tonight. tell us how the president is trying to lower expectations, ed? >> well, shep, to hear the obama camp tell it, it's almost as if they are not sure the president is going to be able to sho
